One Year Ago, Today
Today marks exactly one year since Star and I met.
When you're a baby, a year of your life actually is everything. When you're a kid, a year can feel like everything. The older you get, the less an individual year means statistically, but the greater the significance a year of life can have. For example, a year ago, Star and I were strangers sitting next to one another at Justine's Brasserie, a French restaurant in Austin. We'd both been invited to dinner by a mutual friend, Rose, and joined three others of whom neither Star or myself were close friends with anyone at the table at that point; work acquaintances mostly.
Then, as we sat next to each other hardly speaking, we were people in different worlds. We both had our respective businesses - I was working with Bazaarvoice and just finished up a 2nd year of Style X and Star had her women's boutique/creative space Dog & Pony. We were living on different parts of town, hanging in mostly different crowds and spending our time focusing on far different things. Technically, our friend Rose brought us together, but I guess you can say it was our mutual interest in style that did the real trick.
Regardless, the end of that night is where it started. I casually got her phone number, on Rose's suggestion (for work purposes, mind you), and a few days later texted her about getting a drink. I truly believe neither of us were thinking about dating at that point. It was mostly a work-type connection...perhaps my work with SXSW style could intersect with what she was doing with Dog & Pony. Long story short, a lunch date the next week led to a dinner date that night and another dinner date the following week. By date 3, we said "I love you". By month four, we were married. Eight months later, and it's kind of a blur.
But not a blur in the sense that I don't remember a thing. No, I remember plenty like Star and I taking a trip to San Francisco the week before we wed or our first Thanksgiving where our parents met and all the sweet potato pies Star made me and so much more I'll save for later. Mostly, though, it's a blur in the sense that this train we both hopped on just four months in is still flying at lightning speed.
Maybe that's why this blog is perfect for us now at the one-year mark. Perhaps it will give us a chance to slow down for once, together, and reflect. At minimum, this blog could be something that our future kids will someday learn something about their parents from.
Until then, we have you as our audience. Enjoy.
